I think VC6 is a good place to start learning C++. If you are coming over from Java, there is a fair bit of syntax, as well as some new concepts to get familiar with. I would suggest starting with a simple "hello world" tutorial, then move on to a more interactive console app. Once you feel comfortable with the syntax, then you can delve into MFC and hack up some dialog-based interfaces.
