The first is good for quick reference, the second for looking more deeply into things. I second John's suggestion of the "Effective C++" group of books. If you want something more tutorial, check out Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in C++"; they're available both in print at bookstores and online (free (as in beer)) here:

I am in the middle of my first C++ class, and I have noticed it's hard to find a community of programmers interested in *helping* newbies solve their problems for them...

I guess if you're going to be a good programmer, you've got to think it through yourself... Although that's kind of BS sometimes. Some of us just learn better by CHEATING!!

I have about 3.5 hours to write this program from scratch, practically. I don't know if I'll finish ok. Not if I don't stop trolling tribe!!

But hey, I have an A+ in the class so far, so maybe I can solve novice C++ problems if you whine enough!

After a few years work on programming language
compilers, decompilers and translators, I finally
launched an alpha version of a website for developers
to find code snippets easily. It contains over 100M
loc of c/c++ code. The search is syntax aware, so you
can easily find method calls and class definitions,
etc. I'd like to hear some feedback.

Our web site is at http://www.codase.com.

oh, use Efnet servers if you do use IRC. For programming stuff they have the most channels. some channels would be

#CPP
#C++
#Programming

(no particular order, try em all)

hehe, I remember the GPA calculator. Really you havn't come up with anything useful searching the net? I havn't been searching for C++ stuff for a while, but I always used to find good references, although I mostly used it to search for info on library functions (you may not be that far yet). IRC channels are a good place for real-time help too - as long as you don't ask RTFM questions the people there can be pretty helpful, but as soon as you slip and ask one they'll reem you. Make sure your handle makes it evident that your a girl, it's sad but you get a lot more help that way (I used to use feminine handles when asking for help a lot) .

(I used to live in Cleveland too, Tremont specifically)

Your question is a bit general for me to suggest anything right now. For me it usually breaks down into a task I'm trying to accomplish, networking, audio filtering, video codec, etc. I've found there is a huge number of people out there willing to share their hard work so that others don't hit the walls they did. Any particular task you're trying to accomplish?

There's also open source code out there that can be helpful in getting an understanding of a particular task. sourceforge.net is an enormous repository of ongoing open source projects.

Megan,

Gee, I don't know ... i've been doing C++ for years and years (about 15), but it's been said that all C++ developers are students of the language ... when I bump into problems, I usually just google for help ... i.e. "C++ +reference +exception"

Some good books I can recommend, though, are the Scott Myers "Effective C++" and "More Effective C++" books, as well as the "C++ Network Programming" books from Addison-Wesley (the ones with the bees on the cover).

Regards,
